Concrete access ramp with handrails and non-slip surface leading to a front door

What a permanent access ramp costs

Guide prices for concrete and paved access ramps, landings and widened paths to the door, across Milton Keynes and surrounding towns.

For a permanent concrete ramp with handrails on the sides that need them and a non-slip finish, the usual cost is up to about £2,500. Longer ramps, ramps that need level landings partway, and paths that need widening are priced on the visit because their size varies so much. Work paid for by a Disabled Facilities Grant is priced to the council's schedule. You get a fixed written price after our free design visit.

What a permanent access ramp costs

What is included in the price

The guide price covers setting out the ramp to a gentle gradient, excavation and sub-base, the concrete or paved ramp itself with a non-slip finish, level landings at the top and bottom, and handrails where they are needed. Surfaces are laid to fall so they drain rather than hold water or ice. We build to the gradients and landings in Approved Document M, and where an occupational therapist has made recommendations, the design follows them.

What a permanent access ramp costs

What makes it cost more or less

  • The height difference to the door, which sets how long the ramp must be
  • Whether the ramp turns and needs intermediate landings
  • Handrails on one side or both
  • Widening paths or removing existing steps
  • Drainage at the bottom so water does not run towards the door
  • Finish: brushed concrete or paving to match the rest of the frontage
  • Raised ramps or platforms over 30cm high, which can need planning permission

Access ramp costs around Milton Keynes

Many homes on Milton Keynes estates have a short, open-plan frontage, so there is often room to run a ramp across the front without it doubling back. Where the path meets a verge or redway, that land is often owned by the council or the Parks Trust, so the ramp has to finish within your boundary. On the slow-draining clay found across much of the city, getting surface water away from the bottom of the ramp and the doorstep matters, and it is built into the price rather than left as an extra.

What to check in any quote

  • The gradient and landing sizes, and that they follow Approved Document M
  • Whether handrails are included and on which sides
  • The non-slip finish and how the surface drains
  • For grant work, that the quote matches the occupational therapist's recommendations
  • Whether removing old steps and paving is included

“Connor and the team recently completed our resin driveway in Bletchley. From going through the design with us and even making pictures so we could see how it looked, to the install and the aftercare, it has all been perfect. Thanks again.”

“Milton Keynes Driveways & Landscaping have just finished our full garden makeover in Milton Keynes. We had a porcelain patio, composite decking and raised sleeper beds. They arrived on time, kept my home clean and the garden looks terrific. They are coming back to do our block paved driveway soon.”

Questions

Things people ask us

What is the cheapest permanent ramp option?
A short, straight concrete ramp with a brushed non-slip finish is the most economical, usually within the guide price of up to about £2,500 with handrails. Keeping the ramp straight, without turning landings, and using the existing path line keeps the cost down.
Is a permanent ramp better than a portable one?
A portable ramp costs less but has to be put out and taken in, can slip, and is rarely gentle enough for daily use. A permanent ramp is always there, has handrails and a proper non-slip surface, and drains properly, which matters for anyone using it every day in all weathers.
Does a concrete ramp need maintenance?
Very little. Keep the surface clear of leaves and moss so it stays non-slip, check handrail fixings now and then, and grit it in icy weather like any other path. Making sure the drain at the bottom stays clear stops water pooling by the door.
How does payment work on grant-funded ramps?
For Disabled Facilities Grant work, the price follows the council's schedule and payment is arranged through the grant process. For privately funded ramps, payment terms are set out in the written quote before anything is booked, with the balance due once the ramp is finished.
How long is an access ramp quote valid?
The written quote states how long its price applies. If you book later, or the grant approval takes time to come through, we recheck the price before confirming. Changes to the design after an occupational therapist's review are repriced and shown to you first.
