Landscaping

Whole gardens, terraces, steps, screening and lighting — designed for you free, with the samples brought to your door.

Free design

We will design your driveway or garden and show you what it will look like, before you have spent a penny or committed to anything.

Samples at your door

We bring the actual blocks, slabs and aggregates to the house so you can see them against your brick, in your light, in the rain.

One price, held

The figure we give you is the figure you pay. No day-rate creep, no extras invented halfway through, nothing added at the end.

How we think about a garden

We start with how you want to use it

Almost every garden problem is a levels problem wearing a disguise. The patio that puddles, the lawn you cannot mow, the steps that feel wrong underfoot, the retaining wall that leans — all of it comes back to where the ground sits and what is holding it there.

So we start with the survey and the levels, work out the terraces and the falls, then design the surfaces and the planting into that. It is the same order you would build a housing site in, and it produces gardens that work rather than gardens that photograph well for a season.

It also means we are comfortable with the awkward ones — steep gardens, split levels, retaining walls, drainage running the wrong way. Those are the jobs we are actually best at.

What you get

Everything below is included in a new patio or terrace

A proper outdoor room rather than a slab of paving. We design the shape, the levels and the lighting around how you will actually use it.

  • A free design so you can see it before you commit
  • A home visit with real samples, at a time that suits you
  • Your old surface taken up and taken away
  • Rock, concrete and old bases broken out at no extra charge
  • One price, agreed up front, with nothing added afterwards
  • A tidy site every evening and no skip left on your road
  • A five year guarantee, in writing, that transfers if you sell
The awkward stuff

Retaining, steps and levels

A retaining wall is a structure. It is holding back tonnes of saturated soil and it needs a footing, drainage behind it and the right materials, none of which you can see once the bed is filled.

Steps are the other thing worth getting right. A flight where the rise and going are inconsistent feels wrong immediately and is genuinely a trip hazard. We set out to a consistent 2R + G and build the flight to it, even when the ground would rather we did not.

  • Concrete footings under every retaining structure
  • Drainage gravel and DPM behind the retained face
  • Steps set out to a consistent rise and going throughout
  • Sleeper, block and stone walling — whichever suits the house
  • Falls designed so water leaves the garden, not the house

Questions

Things people ask us

Do you do design as well as build?
Yes, though we are builders who design rather than a design practice. If your garden needs a planting designer we will say so and work alongside one.
How long does a full garden take?
Typically two to four weeks on site for a standard rear garden, longer where there are significant levels, retaining structures or a garden room involved.
Can you work in winter?
Most of it, yes. Groundworks, walling and paving carry on. Turf and planting are better in the shoulder seasons and we will programme around it rather than lay turf into frozen ground.
Do you take away the old garden?
Everything goes by grab lorry as it comes out. No skip on the road and nothing left in a heap at the bottom of the garden.
