Heavy-duty channel drain across a block paved driveway entrance in Milton Keynes

What it costs to fix a puddling driveway

Guide prices for channel drains and how soakaways are priced, plus why so many Milton Keynes drives struggle with standing water.

A channel drain across a typical driveway or garage entrance costs about £1,000–£1,800 installed. For a heavy-duty, vehicle-rated channel the guide is £120–£200 per metre, so a 6m run across a wide double drive comes to roughly £720–£1,200 on that rate alone. Soakaways are sized and priced only after a percolation test, because the ground decides how big they need to be.

What is included in the price

An installed channel drain covers cutting out a strip of the existing surface, digging the trench, bedding and haunching the channel in concrete, connecting it to where the water is going, and making good the surface either side.

Where the water has nowhere to go, a soakaway or crate system may be needed. We test how fast the ground takes water first and size it from that result, so it is priced separately rather than guessed.

What it costs to fix a puddling driveway

What makes it cost more or less

  • Length of channel and whether it has to take vehicle loads.
  • Where the water can legally go: a soakaway, a permeable area or, with approval, a surface water sewer.
  • How well the ground drains, which sets the size of any soakaway.
  • The surface being cut through, as block paving lifts and relays more easily than resin or tarmac.
  • Whether falls need correcting across part of the drive.
  • Buried services in the line of the trench.

Drainage costs on Milton Keynes clay

Milton Keynes was planned around balancing lakes such as Willen and Caldecotte precisely because its clay drains slowly, and that same ground is why so many drives puddle. In Bletchley soakaways rarely work well on the Oxford Clay, and in Cranfield the boulder clay is poorly drained, so a soakaway there may need to be larger or replaced by another route. Both add to the cost. On the Greensand at Woburn Sands and Aspley Guise, water usually soaks away more readily. Drives at the foot of slopes, as in Bow Brickhill, can take run-off from above and need the channel placed to catch it.

What to check in any quote

  • Whether the channel is heavy-duty and rated for vehicles.
  • That it is bedded and haunched in concrete, not just laid on sand.
  • Exactly where the water ends up, and that it is not the foul sewer or the road.
  • Whether a percolation test has been done before a soakaway is sized.
  • How the surface either side will be made good, and whether it will match.
★★★★★

“Connor and the team recently completed our resin driveway in Bletchley. From going through the design with us and even making pictures so we could see how it looked, to the install and the aftercare, it has all been perfect. Thanks again.”

They arrived on time, kept my home clean and the garden looks terrific. They are coming back to do our block paved driveway soon.”

Questions

Things people ask us

What is the cheapest way to stop my drive puddling?
It depends on the cause. If the falls are only slightly wrong, a single channel drain at the bottom may be enough, rather than relaying the whole drive. If the base has sunk, the low area may need lifting and relaying. We find the cause first so you only pay for what fixes it.
Is a channel drain worth it?
If water is running towards your garage or house, or sitting in the same spot every time it rains, usually yes. Standing water wears a surface faster, can freeze in winter and, on clay, may not drain away for days. A drain that gives the water somewhere to go protects the rest of the drive.
Does driveway drainage need maintenance?
Lift the channel grating now and then and clear out leaves and grit, especially in autumn. A soakaway with a silt trap should have the trap emptied occasionally so debris does not reach the crates. Little else is needed if it was installed properly.
When do I pay for drainage work?
The written quote sets out the payment stages and when each is due. The free design visit carries no charge, and any percolation test needed for a soakaway is explained in the quote so you know before you go ahead.
How long is a drainage quote valid for?
The quote shows how long the price stands. If you decide later, we recheck the figures and confirm them in writing. If the drive has changed since the visit, for example more settlement, we may need to look again.
