Brick built-in fire pit with stone-faced benches around it on a garden patio at dusk

What a built-in fire pit costs

Guide prices for fire pits set into the patio and seating built around them, in Milton Keynes and the towns around it.

A built-in fire pit in stone or brick usually costs £1,200–£2,000. If you want benches built around it, a fire pit with seating starts from about £3,500. A full sunken seating area, dug into the garden with retaining walls and drainage, does not have a standard price: it is costed per job and is usually part of a wider garden build. What a built-in fire pit costs

What is included in the price

For a built-in fire pit, the guide price covers setting out, digging and a solid base, building the pit in stone or brick, lining it so the heat does not damage the masonry, and making good the surrounding paving. Where seating is included, the benches are built on footings and faced to match. A sunken area adds excavation, retaining walls with drainage behind them and a drain or soakaway at the low point, which is why it is costed on its own. A gas-fired pit also needs a Gas Safe registered engineer.

What a built-in fire pit costs

What makes it cost more or less

  • Stone or brick choice and how the faces and copings are finished
  • Whether the pit sits in an existing patio or needs new paving around it
  • Length of built-in benching and whether it curves or runs straight
  • How deep a sunken area is dug and how much soil has to leave site
  • Retaining walls and the drainage needed to keep the seating dry
  • Wood-burning or gas, and how far a gas supply would need to run
  • Access for a digger and skip, especially on tight terraced or estate plots

Fire pit costs across Milton Keynes

On the slow-draining clay found under most of Milton Keynes, Bletchley and Hanslope, rain has nowhere to go once it reaches the bottom of a dug-out seating area, so drainage is a bigger share of the cost there and a soakaway may not work at all. On the free-draining Greensand around Woburn and Aspley Guise, water clears more easily, though sloping plots still send run-off downhill. A simple fire pit on an existing patio is affected far less by the ground than a sunken area.

What to check in any quote

  • That the fire pit is lined and not just built from ordinary bricks
  • The distance planned from fences, trees, sheds and the house
  • How a sunken area will be drained and where the water ends up
  • Whether retaining walls have proper footings and drainage behind
  • Whether removing the dug soil is included
★★★★★

“Connor and the team recently completed our resin driveway in Bletchley. From going through the design with us and even making pictures so we could see how it looked, to the install and the aftercare, it has all been perfect. Thanks again.”

“Milton Keynes Driveways & Landscaping have just finished our full garden makeover in Milton Keynes. We had a porcelain patio, composite decking and raised sleeper beds. They arrived on time, kept my home clean and the garden looks terrific. They are coming back to do our block paved driveway soon.”

Questions

Things people ask us

What is the cheapest built-in fire pit option?
A round or square brick pit set into a patio you already have is the most economical, sitting at the lower end of the £1,200–£2,000 range. Seating can be added later as freestanding furniture, and a sunken area is the dearest route because of the digging, walls and drainage.
Is a built-in fire pit worth it over a freestanding bowl?
A freestanding bowl is cheaper and moves with you, but it can mark paving and blow over. A built-in pit is lined, set at a safe distance from fences and trees, and becomes a fixed focal point that adds to the garden. If you use it regularly, the built-in version is the longer-lasting choice.
What does a fire pit cost to run and maintain?
A wood-burning pit costs whatever you spend on dry logs, plus clearing the ash. A gas pit costs the gas it burns and should be serviced as its maker recommends. Masonry and seating faces only need brushing down, and a cover keeps rain out of the bowl between uses.
Do you take a deposit for a fire pit?
Payment terms are written into the quote before you agree anything, so there are no surprises. Any stage payments are linked to work you can see finished on site, and the balance falls due once the job is complete and you are happy with it.
How long does a fire pit price stay valid?
Each written quote shows how long its price is held. Stone and brick prices can change over time, so if you book after that date we check the figures again before confirming. Changes to the design are repriced and the difference shown before work starts.
