Permeable driveways in Wolverton
Permeable driveways and rear parking for Wolverton's Victorian terraces, planned around the Article 4 direction on the road-facing side of houses.
As a guide, a permeable driveway in Wolverton costs £150–£220 per m² in resin bound, £140–£210 per m² in permeable block or £60–£100 per m² in stabilised gravel, all in. The deciding local factor is the Article 4 direction: in the conservation area any new hard surface at the front needs planning permission, even a permeable one, while rear gardens off the back ways are not affected.

Permeable driveways in Wolverton
Wolverton is the one town we cover where the usual permeable-driveway rule does not settle the planning question at the front. The conservation area's Article 4 direction removes permitted development for any new hard surface on the road-facing side of houses, so a front drive there needs planning permission whatever it is made of. Behind the terraces it is a different story: rear gardens off the back ways are not affected.
That makes rear parking off the back ways a common conversation here. On the free design visit we look at both sides of the house, confirm whether you are inside the conservation area and explain the planning route before any design work starts. If the front needs an application, we tell you so plainly rather than building first and hoping. Behind the house, we check the width of the back way, the levels and the ground. The prices shown are guide figures; the fixed price comes in writing after the visit.
What makes Wolverton different
The railway town sits on Great Oolite limestone, the local Blisworth stone, under patches of boulder clay, so drainage changes from street to street. One rear yard may soak water away well while the next holds it, which is why we test rather than assume before designing a permeable base. In the grid of terraces many houses sit right on the pavement with no front garden at all; later streets have a low brick wall and a small yard. The Great Ouse flood plain lies to the north, with the terraced core sitting above it.
A typical Wolverton job is a Victorian terrace with a back gate onto a rear way and a yard or garden behind. We open up a hardstanding off the back way, lay an open-graded base sized for whatever the ground test shows, and finish in permeable block or stabilised gravel. Front works are only designed once the planning route is clear.

Permissions and checks in Wolverton
- Step 1A new or replacement front driveway needs no planning permission if it is permeable, or if the water drains to a lawn or border on your own land. More than 5m² of impermeable surface draining to the road needs planning permission. Wolverton’s Article 4 direction covers the road-facing side of houses, including front walls and new hard surfaces at the front, so anything there needs planning permission; back gardens are not affected.
