Louvred pergolas in Ampthill

Louvred pergolas in Ampthill

Ampthill ranges from the Georgian market place and thatched Ossory Cottages to newer estates such as Ampthill Heights and Ampthill Gardens on the former brewery land. Many historic frontages sit right on the pavement, so the outdoor living happens at the back. A louvred pergola gives that space a roof you can open for sun or close against rain, with the water carried inside the frame and down the posts. We start with a free design visit to measure up and look at the ground.

In terms of budget, a louvred aluminium pergola starts from £4,500 supplied and fitted, for a 3m × 4m frame on a suitable existing base. Bigger sizes, motorised louvres, side screens, glass walls and any new base are priced after the site visit. Frames go from 3m × 3m to 8m × 3m in black, anthracite, latte or light stone, with warm-white LEDs built into the roof. Sides can be open or fitted with privacy louvres, glass walls and sliding doors, or blinds. After the visit you get a fixed price in writing.

Ampthill specifically

What makes Ampthill different

The town stands on the sandy Greensand Ridge, yet gives its name to the Ampthill Clay on the lower ground to the north, so the ground can change from free-draining sand to heavy clay within a short distance. On the sand, post water can often go to a soakaway; on the clay it needs drainage, and pads need more care. The conservation area is large and includes Church Square. In it, a pergola cannot go between the side of the house and the boundary, and listed houses need permission. There is no Article 4 direction. Central Bedfordshire Council deals with planning.

A typical Ampthill pergola is a 3m × 4m frame over the patio of a house on one of the newer estates, or a smaller frame in the rear garden of an older town house. It usually involves checking the base, fixing the posts or setting pads, and choosing between soakaway and drainage once we know whether the plot is sand or clay.

Permissions and checks in Ampthill

  1. Step 1A freestanding pergola in a rear garden is normally permitted development if it stays behind the front of the house, is no more than 2.5m high at the eaves and 2.5m overall within 2m of a boundary, does not sit on a platform more than 30cm high, and together with any sheds or other outbuildings covers no more than half the garden. A listed house needs planning permission for one. In a conservation area it also cannot go between the side of the house and the boundary. Planning Portal: outbuildings
  2. Step 2Trees in a conservation area need six weeks’ written notice before any work, and trees with a Tree Preservation Order need consent — both are free. Central Bedfordshire Council: trees in conservation areas

Questions

Louvred pergolas in Ampthill: questions

What will a louvred pergola cost in Ampthill?
It starts from £4,500 supplied and fitted, for a 3m × 4m frame on a suitable existing base. Bigger sizes, motorised louvres, side screens, glass walls and any new base are priced after the site visit. The fixed price follows in writing after the free design visit.
Do I need permission for a pergola in Ampthill Conservation Area?
Not usually for a freestanding rear-garden pergola within the height, platform and coverage limits, and Ampthill has no Article 4 direction. Within the conservation area, the side-of-house position is ruled out, and listed houses need planning permission.
Can a pergola go on an Ampthill Heights or Ampthill Gardens patio?
Yes, if the patio is sound. We check the slabs at the visit and fix to them where they are solid; otherwise we add concrete pads under the posts or lay a new patio, which is priced separately after the visit.
How do I know if my garden is on sand or clay?
Roughly, the higher ground is Greensand and the lower ground to the north is Ampthill Clay, but the change can happen within a short distance. We dig a test at the visit and design the post drainage around what we find.
