Fencing in Ampthill
Fencing for Ampthill's Georgian town and newer estates like Ampthill Heights, with posts set for sandy ridge or heavy clay.
Closeboard timber fencing in Ampthill typically costs £80–£100 per metre supplied and fitted on concrete posts, and composite and aluminium slatted fencing starts from about £240 per metre fitted at 1.8m high, as guide prices. The most important local factor is the ground: the town stands on Greensand, yet the lower ground to the north is the Ampthill Clay, so conditions change quickly.

Fencing in Ampthill
Ampthill is a Georgian market town whose market place, pump and clock tower were improved in the 1780s, with the thatched Ossory Cottages and Ampthill Great Park beside it. Newer estates such as Ampthill Heights and Ampthill Gardens, on the former brewery land, add modern plots with standard rear and side boundaries. Those newer gardens, and the back gardens of the older houses, are where most of the fencing we put up in Ampthill is needed.
Our options are closeboard timber on concrete posts with gravel boards, or composite and aluminium slatted fencing on aluminium posts, with matching gates and screens. On the free design visit we check your address against the conservation area, measure the runs and look at how the ground drains on your side of town. Taking out the old fence is priced while we are there, and a fixed price follows in writing once everything is measured.
What makes Ampthill different
The town stands on the sandy Greensand Ridge, yet gives its name to the Ampthill Clay on the lower ground to the north, so ground can change from free-draining sand to heavy clay within a short distance. Sand needs firm concrete round each post; clay needs timber kept off the wet soil. Ampthill Conservation Area is large and includes Church Square, and many historic frontages sit right on the pavement, so boundary walls and railings matter to the planners. There is no Article 4 direction.
A typical Ampthill job is a house on Ampthill Heights or Ampthill Gardens with a rear garden that needs a sturdier, better-looking boundary, or an older house with a worn fence at the back. We take out the old run, set concrete posts, fit gravel boards and closeboard or slatted panels, and hang a matching side gate.
