What is included in the price

For closeboard, the per metre rate covers concrete posts set in concrete at the right depth, gravel boards along the bottom so the timber never touches the soil, the rails and boards, and clearing up afterwards.

For composite and aluminium slatted fencing, the rate covers aluminium posts set in concrete and the slatted panels fitted to them. Matching gates, privacy screens and lit capping are priced as separate items, and so is taking out and disposing of an existing fence.

What makes it cost more or less

  • The material: timber closeboard is the lower rate, composite and aluminium the higher.
  • Height, especially for slatted fencing, where the starting rate is for 1.8m panels.
  • Taking down and disposing of the old fence, posts and concrete.
  • Slopes that need the fence stepped or raked to follow the ground.
  • Gates, privacy screens and lighting added to the run.
  • Access to the line of the fence, and roots or buried concrete in the way of new posts.

Fence costs around Milton Keynes

On the clay that runs under most of Milton Keynes and Bletchley, posts need setting deep enough to resist the ground swelling and shrinking, and that is built into the rate. In the grid-square estates many front gardens are open plan, and the original planning permission on some estates removed the right to put up a front fence, so we check before designing one. In Newport Pagnell's Castle Meadow an Article 4 direction covers walls, fences and gates. The conservation area reviews in Stony Stratford, Hanslope and Bletchley also discourage close-boarded fencing on street boundaries, which can steer you towards a different design.

What to check in any quote

  • The total length in metres and the rate per metre.
  • Post type, how deep the posts go and whether they are set in concrete.
  • Whether gravel boards are included under timber panels.
  • Whether removing and disposing of the old fence is included.
  • The finished height, and whether it needs planning permission where it is going.

“Connor and the team recently completed our resin driveway in Bletchley. From going through the design with us and even making pictures so we could see how it looked, to the install and the aftercare, it has all been perfect. Thanks again.”

Questions

Things people ask us

What is the cheapest fence that still lasts?
Closeboard timber on concrete posts with gravel boards, at £80–£100 per metre fitted. The concrete posts and gravel boards keep the timber out of the soil, which is where cheaper fences usually fail first. Keeping your existing posts can look like a saving, but only if they are sound and straight.
Is composite or aluminium fencing worth paying more for?
It starts from about £240 per metre against £80–£100 for closeboard, so it is a bigger outlay. In return it never needs painting or staining and keeps its colour, so it suits people who want a modern look and no upkeep. For a long boundary at the back of the garden, timber is usually the better value.
What does a fence cost to maintain?
Closeboard timber benefits from a coat of treatment every few years, which is either your time or a small decorating bill. Composite and aluminium slatted panels only need washing down. On both, keep soil and plants away from the bottom so water can drain.
Do I need to pay a deposit for a fence?
Payment stages are set out in the written quote we send after the free design visit, so you can see what is due and when before agreeing to anything. There is no charge for the visit itself.
How long does a fencing quote last?
The written quote states how long the price is held. Timber and aluminium prices change through the year, so if you come back after that date we recheck the figures and confirm them in writing before booking anything in.
