What is included in the price

For new gates, the guide price covers the aluminium or composite gate, the posts and the foundations built for its weight and the motor, the automation itself, and the controls you choose such as a keypad, intercom or remote fobs. Every automated gate is fitted with safety edges or photocells and force-tested after installation. The cable run from the house is not in the guide price, because its length and route vary so much from one drive to the next; it is quoted after the visit.

How much electric driveway gates cost

What makes it cost more or less

  • Width of the opening and the height of the gate
  • Sliding or swing: sliding gates need a track or cantilever and clear run-back space
  • Material and infill style, and matching existing fencing
  • Slope of the drive, which can rule out swing gates or need extra work
  • Access controls: keypad, intercom, fobs or app
  • Distance from the house to the gate for the power cable
  • Whether existing gates are strong and square enough to automate

Driveway gate costs in Milton Keynes

Many Milton Keynes estates were built with open-plan frontages, so gates often go across a drive that has never had one, and the land just beyond the boundary may belong to the council or the Parks Trust. Gates must not open outwards over a footway or road, which can push a short drive towards a sliding gate. On the heavy clay common across the city, post and motor foundations need to be deep enough to stay put. In the old village conservation areas, road-facing gates can need permission, so we check your address first.

What to check in any quote

  • That safety edges or photocells are included and force testing is done
  • Foundation and post sizes for the gate weight and motor
  • Whether the power supply and its certification are included
  • What access controls and how many fobs come with the price
  • Whether the height and opening direction comply with permitted development rules

Questions

Things people ask us

What is the cheapest way to get electric gates?
If your current gates are solid, level and well hung, motorising them is the lowest-cost route, at about £1,500–£3,000 plus the power supply. For new gates, automated swing gates at £4,000–£8,000 usually come in below a sliding gate, provided the drive has room for them to open inwards.
Are electric driveway gates worth it?
For many owners the value is in security, keeping children and dogs in, and not having to leave the car to open the gate. They can also make a frontage look finished. On an open-plan estate road, though, check that gates suit the street and do not need consent before deciding.
What are the running costs of electric gates?
Gate motors use little electricity in normal use. The main ongoing cost is servicing: hinges, tracks and safety devices should be checked regularly, and force testing repeated so the gate stays safe. Keeping a sliding gate track clear of leaves and grit avoids most faults.
How are payments for gates structured?
Your written quote sets out exactly what is payable and at which stage before anything is ordered. Because gates are often made to measure, the order point is made clear in the quote, and the balance is due on completion once the gate has been tested and handed over.
How long is a gate quote valid?
The quote states how long its price stands. Metal and motor prices can shift, so after that date we recheck the costs before confirming. If you change the style, width or automation after quoting, those parts are repriced and shown to you first.
