Closeboard timber fencing in Cranfield typically costs £80–£100 per metre supplied and fitted on concrete posts, and composite and aluminium slatted fencing starts from about £240 per metre fitted at 1.8m high. Both are guide prices. The most important local factor is the heavy, poorly drained boulder clay, which keeps ground wet, so timber must be kept off the soil and posts must not rot.

Fencing in Cranfield

Fencing in Cranfield

Cranfield has grown a long way beyond its older core along High Street and Court Road, with estates that took the village from about 4,900 people in 2001 to around 6,000 by 2018. Many of those homes still have the fencing they were built with, and estate panels on timber posts tend to fail at the base first. Replacing a whole garden in one go gives matching heights and a fence that will last.

For these gardens we offer closeboard timber on concrete posts with gravel boards, or composite and aluminium slatted fencing on aluminium posts, with gates and screens to match. The free design visit covers every run: we measure, check how wet the ground is along each boundary, and look for any ditch or water route that must be kept clear. Removal of the old estate fence is priced on site, and the written price that follows is fixed.

Cranfield specifically

What makes Cranfield different

Cranfield sits on a plateau of heavy chalky boulder clay over Oxford Clay. It is poorly drained, and in June 2016 surface water affected around 80 properties, according to Central Bedfordshire Council's flood investigation. For fencing, wet clay is what rots timber posts and the bottom of panels, so we use concrete or aluminium posts and gravel boards as standard. With no conservation area or Article 4 direction, normal permitted development applies unless your estate's planning permission removed it.

A typical Cranfield job is an estate semi or detached house where the original fence has leaned or rotted at ground level. We take out the old posts, set concrete posts, fit gravel boards and closeboard along the sides and back, and add a side gate. Some owners choose slatted aluminium for the run nearest the patio.

Questions

Fencing in Cranfield: questions

How much does a new fence cost in Cranfield?
On a typical Cranfield estate garden, closeboard on concrete posts with gravel boards is the value choice at £80–£100 per metre supplied and fitted. Composite and aluminium slatted fencing starts from about £240 per metre fitted at 1.8m high. These are guide prices; the old fence removal is priced on site and the final figure is fixed in writing.
Is there a conservation area in Cranfield?
No. Cranfield has neither a conservation area nor an Article 4 direction, so a fence is normally permitted development up to 2m, or 1m next to a road or footpath used by vehicles. Some estates here carry planning conditions on front boundaries, which we look up before any front fence is designed.
Why did my old estate fence rot at the bottom?
Cranfield's boulder clay holds water, so anything timber touching the soil stays damp. Gravel boards lift the panels clear of the ground, and concrete or aluminium posts cannot rot, which deals with the usual failure point.
My boundary floods after heavy rain. Should I still fence it?
Yes, but it changes the detail. Surface water is the real risk in Cranfield, so we use posts that are unaffected by standing water and keep timber off the ground. We will not block a ditch or water route along your boundary.
